In a powerful show of solidarity and remorse, the Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) has extended a helping hand to the family of seven-year-old Lolitha Kowa, whose life was tragically cut short in Khayelitsha.
Lolitha was last seen playing at a neighbour’s home near her own in Kuyasa on the evening of Tuesday, 22 July 2025. Her disappearance sparked widespread concern, and heartbreak soon followed when her lifeless body was discovered two kilometres from her house. The brutal death sent shockwaves through the community, sparking public outrage and calls for justice.
On Thursday, 31 July, Codeta leaders, including chairperson Nceba Enge, visited the grieving Kowa family to express condolences and offer support. During the emotional visit, Enge announced that Codeta would donate R15,000 towards funeral expenses and gift the family a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi — fully paid for by the association.
Enge didn’t shy away from addressing the dark shadow cast over Codeta by the allegations that one of their drivers, Odwa Jack, may be involved in the murder. “As Codeta, we are deeply sorry for what happened. The person accused of this crime is our driver, and for that, we take responsibility in expressing our regret,” Enge said. “We do not support the actions of the accused. We want justice to take its course.”
Local leaders praised Codeta for stepping forward. Ward 99 Councillor Lonwabo Mqina applauded the association’s commitment to accountability and community support. “Your presence here shows that you do not condone what happened. We are all parents, and we don’t raise children to commit such acts,” he said.
The Malihambe Women’s Movement, which supports victims and families affected by gender-based violence, also commended Codeta’s gesture. Nosipho Daniels, who has been closely supporting the Kowa family, remarked, “Codeta’s contribution has brought some relief and will truly help during this difficult time.”
Lolitha’s aunt, Ntombifuthi Kowa, expressed the family’s heartfelt appreciation for the outpouring of support. “We appreciate what Codeta has done. Their support has lifted a burden from our shoulders,” she said. Ntombifuthi also acknowledged the assistance received from political and community organisations, including the ANC.
Ndithini Tyhido, ANC regional chairperson, confirmed that the party had been assisting the Kowa family since the tragedy occurred. He noted that acts of solidarity like Codeta’s were crucial in helping the family find some comfort amid unbearable grief.
As investigations into Lolitha’s death continue, the community remains united in their demand for justice. The generous act by Codeta — despite the alleged link between the suspect and their organisation — has been seen as a meaningful gesture, reinforcing the importance of compassion, accountability, and collective healing in times of sorrow.
