A Final Farewell to a Comedy Star
Family, friends, and fans gathered in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, on Friday, March 14, 2025, to bid their final farewell to beloved comedian Ebenhaezer Dibakwane. Affectionately known as Ebby, the 31-year-old entertainer passed away on March 7. He was laid to rest at Rocky’s Drift cemetery near White River.
Throughout the emotional ceremony, speakers described Ebby as a highly intelligent, selfless, and incredibly talented individual. His presence in the entertainment industry left a lasting impact, and those closest to him shared heartfelt memories of the joy he brought to their lives.
A Brother’s Tribute
Ebby’s brother, Lesedi Dibakwane, reflected on their childhood and the remarkable qualities that defined him. He spoke about how Ebby had always treated those around him with deep respect and kindness.
“Ebby was a special child from an early age. His intelligence—his genius—was evident even when he was young. He had a gift for storytelling and always found creative solutions to challenges,” Lesedi said.
He also spoke about Ebby’s journey in the tough Johannesburg comedy scene and how proud he was of his achievements.
“When he won the Comic Choice Award, it was proof of the immense talent we always knew he had. Ebby became larger than life. A Friend’s Painful Revelation
Close friend Siyabonga “Stig” Sesanti revealed that Ebby had struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts for a long time.
“I was the first to arrive at his house after his passing, and we couldn’t find a suicide note. But then we realized—he didn’t need one. He had been telling us for years, through his performances, in conversations, and even in his music,” Siyabonga shared.
He urged fellow artists to speak out and seek help for their mental health struggles.
A Parents’ Heartfelt Goodbye
Ebby’s parents, Paul and Lucy Dibakwane, expressed their love and pride for their son in a letter read by a relative. They shared how they had supported his decision to leave his teaching studies and pursue a career in comedy.
“When Ebby told us he wanted to follow his dreams, we released him to do so. Little did we know that his time with us would be so short,” the letter read.
The grieving parents emphasized that the cherished moments they shared with their son would live on in their hearts forever.
