A Hero Honored in His Final Resting Place
Corporal Matome Justice Malesa, a dedicated soldier who would have celebrated his 43rd birthday on February 25, was laid to rest on Saturday, February 22, at his home village of Mashishimale in Phalaborwa. Malesa was among the 13 South African soldiers who lost their lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) following a confrontation with the M23 rebel group.
A Daughter’s Heartfelt Tribute
During the emotional funeral service, Malesa’s 15-year-old daughter, Lesedi Malesa, delivered a moving tribute that left mourners in tears. She expressed how her father had been a pillar of strength, love, and courage, not only for their family but also for his fellow soldiers and community.
“Today, we gather here with heavy hearts to say goodbye to a man of honor, courage, and love—my dad. He was not just my dad but also my mom’s husband, a soldier, a protector, and a man dedicated to his country and family,” Lesedi said.
She further highlighted the values her father instilled in them, emphasizing his unwavering kindness and his ability to stand for what is right. “He taught us the true meaning of strength—not just to fight back but to be kind, to stand up for what is right, and to love without limits.”
A Community in Mourning
Residents of Mashishimale described Corporal Malesa as a humble and down-to-earth man. Masilo Ngoepe, a 56-year-old resident, shared his memories of Malesa’s presence in the community.
“He wasn’t home regularly due to his duties, but when he was, you could tell. He was a kind man who loved his family deeply,” Ngoepe said.
Another local, Maria Kgoshikgolo, expressed the deep sorrow felt by the entire village.
“As the Mashishimale community, we are deeply saddened by how he left us. He was our brother; everyone knew Corporal Malesa as a man of great humility.”
A Legacy of Dedication and Service
The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) also paid tribute to Corporal Malesa. Chaplain M.R.C. Mokhele spoke at the funeral, acknowledging Malesa’s dedication and the void his passing leaves behind.
“His passing leaves a huge void, but his legacy as a devoted warrior and his dedication to his nation will always be cherished. His humor and exceptional character touched many in the military and beyond,” Mokhele said.
Honoring the Fallen
A memorial service for Malesa and his fellow fallen soldiers was held on February 13 at Airforce Base Swartkop in Pretoria.
Between February 22 and 23, Limpopo province laid eight of its fallen troops to rest, honoring their sacrifice and dedication to the nation.
Corporal Matome Justice Malesa’s bravery and commitment to serving his country will forever be remembered. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his loved ones and the community he cherished.
