On Saturday, a tragic accident occurred on the N2 highway near Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal, claiming the lives of four people and leaving several others injured. Authorities have since arrested the bus driver involved in the crash.
The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, confirmed the devastating news and revealed that the unroadworthy bus was en route from the Eastern Cape to Durban when it overturned. The bus was carrying more than 33 passengers at the time of the accident.
“Unfortunately, four people lost their lives in this tragic incident, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims,” said Duma. “I have been in contact with Eastern Cape Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha to ensure that the families of those who lost their lives receive the necessary support.”
The injured passengers were promptly transported to public healthcare facilities in the Ugu district, where they are receiving medical attention. The extent of the injuries varies, but emergency responders have been working tirelessly to assist all those affected.
In the wake of the accident, the bus driver was taken into custody and charged with culpable homicide. He is currently being held at Margate police station. Meanwhile, the bus has been impounded for further examination by the Road Traffic Inspectorate at their Port Shepstone offices.
Duma emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating that highly trained examiners and experts would be involved in the investigation to ensure all regulations are thoroughly reviewed. “We will not hesitate to take strict action against anyone found to have violated traffic laws, and we are committed to holding those responsible accountable.”
Due to the severity of the incident, both the northbound and southbound lanes of the N2 were temporarily closed to allow emergency personnel to perform their duties and clear the scene.
This incident follows a series of deadly accidents on KwaZulu-Natal roads in recent days, highlighting ongoing concerns over road safety and the enforcement of regulations for public transportation vehicles.
Authorities are urging all drivers to exercise caution and ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy to prevent further tragedies. Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
