South African reality TV star and socialite Eva Modika has found herself at the centre of online debate after revealing that she is stranded in Dubai and appealing to President Cyril Ramaphosa for urgent assistance.
Modika shared her predicament on Instagram on Saturday, 28 February 2026, explaining that she is currently unable to return home following disruptions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Her appeal comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East after the United States and Israel reportedly launched a military operation in Iran, prompting the UAE to temporarily implement a partial closure of its airspace.

Birthday Trip Turns Into Crisis
According to Modika’s public statement, she had travelled to Dubai both to celebrate her birthday and to fulfil professional commitments. She said she had been booked as a DJ and reality TV personality for events in the city. However, escalating regional tensions resulted in the cancellation of scheduled gigs and the suspension of flights.
As a result, Modika claims she has suffered financial losses amounting to approximately R250,000. In her statement, she explained that the sudden disruptions left her stranded and without the income she had expected to earn from the trip.
“I was booked in Dubai as a DJ and reality TV personality. Due to the current circumstances, events have been disrupted, and all flights have been suspended,” she wrote. “As a result, I have suffered financial losses amounting to approximately R250,000.”

Appeal to Government for Intervention
In her message, Modika directly appealed to President Ramaphosa and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), urging them to intervene and assist South Africans currently in the region.
She called for urgent guidance, support and possible evacuation measures to ensure the safe return of affected citizens. “We respectfully request guidance, support, and possible evacuation measures to ensure our safe return home,” her statement read.
Her plea was later reshared by popular blogger MDNNews on X (formerly Twitter), quickly drawing widespread attention and sparking heated discussions online.
Mixed Reactions from South Africans
Social media users responded with divided opinions. Some expressed sympathy and concern over the safety of South Africans in Dubai, while others questioned why government intervention was being sought in what they viewed as a private travel matter.
A number of users pointed out that international travel typically requires comprehensive travel insurance, suggesting that Modika should pursue assistance through her insurer. Others argued that if airspace is officially closed, even the South African government may have limited ability to facilitate immediate evacuations.
There were also critics who felt the government should have issued earlier warnings to citizens travelling to high-risk regions, especially as geopolitical tensions escalated.
Renewed Spotlight on Modika
The incident has once again placed Modika in the public eye. The reality TV personality has previously made headlines for her candid discussions about her lifestyle and high-profile associations.
While it remains unclear how long the airspace restrictions will remain in place, Modika’s situation highlights the uncertainty faced by travellers during periods of international conflict. For now, she and other South Africans in the region await clarity and potential assistance as tensions continue to unfold.
