South Africa bid an emotional farewell to veteran actress Nandi Nyembe, who passed away at the age of 75 after a long illness. The legendary performer, whose career spanned over five decades, was laid to rest at the Westpark Cemetery in Randburg, Johannesburg, on Saturday, 30 August 2025.
The funeral service drew family, friends, fellow actors, and admirers who gathered to celebrate the life of a woman who became one of the country’s most cherished performers. Nyembe was best known for her memorable roles in productions such as Yizo Yizo, Soul City, Zone 14, Isibaya, and more recently, Adulting on Mzansi Magic. Her versatility and ability to embody powerful characters made her a household name and a respected figure in the entertainment industry.
A Heartfelt Tribute from Thoko Ntshinga
Among those who paid tribute was fellow actress Thoko Ntshinga, who recalled first meeting Nyembe in the 1970s when she herself was still searching for work. Ntshinga described her friend as a “multi-talented thespian” who inspired others with her commitment to the craft.
Ntshinga used the moment not only to honour Nyembe but also to highlight the struggles that South African artists continue to face. Addressing mourners, she urged fellow creatives to unite and demand better working conditions in the industry.
“I don’t want to be talking to the government. We’ve spoken to the government, we have complained. We have asked. We have cried. I want to speak to the artists,” Ntshinga said. “When do we take ourselves seriously? If you feel you are going to be underpaid, don’t take the job. Our industry is a job like any other job. But why do we allow ourselves to be ill-treated? We need to get together. If we are in the same job and we want to do something about it as ama-artist, do it as a collective.”
Her words struck a chord with many in attendance, reminding them that while Nyembe’s life was being celebrated, her passing also highlighted ongoing challenges faced by those in the creative sector.

Poetry, Song, and Celebration of Life
The service was marked by moving tributes, music, and poetry. Renowned poet Mzwakhe Mbuli delivered a powerful poem in Nyembe’s honour, capturing the depth of loss felt not only by her family but by the nation as a whole. His words painted a portrait of a woman whose artistry reached far beyond the screen, touching hearts and leaving behind an enduring cultural legacy.
Friends and colleagues described Nyembe as warm, humble, and deeply committed to mentoring young actors. Many shared how she was always willing to give advice, encouragement, and support to the next generation of performers.
A Lasting Legacy
As her coffin was lowered into the ground, mourners reflected on a career that had shaped the landscape of South African television and film. Nyembe’s performances told stories that resonated across generations, and her presence on screen became a source of pride for many viewers.
Her death marks the end of an era, but her influence will continue to inspire. For audiences, colleagues, and the countless people she impacted through her artistry, Nandi Nyembe will remain a beacon of excellence in South African storytelling.
Though her physical presence is gone, her voice, characters, and the lessons she left behind will echo for years to come.
