A fire erupted on Saturday afternoon, 19 April, at the Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital in Ekurhuleni, causing panic but thankfully resulting in no injuries or fatalities. The blaze started in the hospital’s accident and emergency (A&E) unit, prompting an immediate evacuation of patients and a swift response from firefighters and emergency services.

According to Motalatale Modiba, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Health, approximately 79 patients were safely evacuated from the affected area. He praised the rapid coordination between hospital staff and emergency response teams, which helped prevent what could have been a tragic situation.

“We can confirm that there were no casualties or injuries as a result of the fire. Thanks to the quick response from hospital staff and emergency personnel, all patients were safely moved to secure areas within the hospital,” Modiba stated.https://x.com/TlotlisoM_/status/1913644472035901745?t=LxuORL9wFys1yB-sj6SysA&s=19

Firefighters from both the City of Ekurhuleni and Gauteng Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded promptly to the scene and worked together to contain the fire. Although the flames were successfully extinguished, the hospital remains in the process of cleaning up the damage. Assessments are currently underway to determine the extent of the destruction caused by the fire.

Officials are also working to ensure that all evacuated patients are properly accounted for and safely housed within other parts of the hospital. The fire did not spread beyond the A&E unit, and the remaining wards were not affected.

“The hospital is currently not admitting new patients and will remain on divert until further notice,” said Modiba. “We urge the public and families of patients not to panic. The situation is under control and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.”

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, which remains unknown at this time.

This incident follows other recent fire-related tragedies in the region, highlighting the need for strict safety measures in public institutions, especially health facilities where vulnerable patients are at risk.

Despite the disruption, the Health Department has reassured the community that patient safety remains a top priority. Contingency plans are being put in place to minimize the impact on hospital operations and ensure continuity of care for those affected.

As the investigation continues, the public is advised to stay informed through official communication channels and avoid spreading unverified information. The hospital will resume normal operations once it is deemed safe to do so.
