The family of the late former Zambian President Edgar Lungu has confirmed that he will be buried in South Africa following disagreements with the Zambian government over the arrangements for his funeral.
Lungu, who passed away while undergoing specialised medical treatment in South Africa, will now be laid to rest in the country where he spent his final days. His family issued a statement expressing their decision, saying that the burial will be conducted in accordance with their wishes and in consultation with close relatives.
According to the statement, the family revealed that despite efforts to collaborate with the Zambian government on the funeral plans, the two parties were unable to reach a mutual understanding on how to give the former head of state a final send-off. As a result, the family opted to proceed with a private funeral and burial in South Africa.
“This period has been extremely emotional for us as a family,” the statement read. “We are, however, deeply grateful for the overwhelming support, sympathy, and condolences that have poured in from across Zambia, Africa, and the international community.”
The family extended their gratitude to the South African government for its cooperation and support during this time of grief. They specifically thanked the South African authorities for respecting the family’s decision to hold a private ceremony and for helping facilitate the burial arrangements within the country.
Acknowledging the emotional impact of Lungu’s passing on the people of Zambia, the family called for calm, unity, and understanding during this difficult period. They urged all Zambians, regardless of political affiliation, to prioritise peace as they mourn the loss of their former leader.
“We appeal for peace amongst all Zambians and thank all friends, supporters, and members of the public for their understanding during this challenging time,” the family said.
Details regarding the exact date and location of the funeral service and burial will be made public in due course. The family assured both the Zambian and South African communities that they will be informed as soon as the plans are finalised.
Lungu served as Zambia’s president from 2015 until 2021, when he was defeated by current President Hakainde Hichilema in a closely watched election. His presidency was marked by significant political shifts in Zambia as well as ongoing economic challenges.
The news of Lungu’s death was first announced earlier in June 2025 by his political party, Patriotic Front. Since then, messages of condolences have come from African leaders, political parties, and citizens who remember his role in the country’s leadership.
The disagreement between his family and the Zambian government has drawn mixed reactions from the public, with some expressing disappointment over the lack of consensus on how to honour a former head of state.
Despite the controversy, Lungu’s family has remained firm in their decision to have him buried in South Africa, emphasizing that it reflects their personal wishes and the circumstances surrounding his passing.
