In 2010, Thembi Maphanga’s life was changed forever in one of the most horrific ways imaginable. The young mother survived a brutal and senseless act of gender-based violence that left her physically scarred but spiritually unbreakable. Today, she is not only a burn survivor, but also a powerful voice for countless women who silently endure abuse.
Fifteen years ago, Thembi endured a trauma that would have broken most people. In a shocking act of cruelty, her partner poured petrol on her and set her alight. The attack was not only physically devastating — it also cost her something far more painful: the life of her beloved two-year-old daughter, Kamo.
Thembi suffered 80% burn wounds. Doctors did not think she would survive. Her journey to recovery was long, painful, and emotionally draining. She underwent numerous surgeries, skin grafts, and spent months in hospital fighting for her life. But beyond the physical pain, she also had to come to terms with the loss of her child and the betrayal by someone she once trusted.
For years, she carried not just scars on her body, but deep emotional wounds. Yet despite all she had been through, Thembi made a courageous decision — she would not allow her story to end in tragedy. Instead, she would use her survival to empower others.
Today, Thembi is a passionate gender-based violence (GBV) activist. She speaks out boldly against abuse and femicide, using her voice and story to reach survivors, educate communities, and challenge the silence that often surrounds domestic violence. She regularly shares her experiences at schools, women’s groups, and public events, helping others realise they are not alone and that healing is possible.
Her message is simple but powerful: “Your pain does not define you. You can rise, even from the ashes.”
Through her work, Thembi has not only found healing for herself but has also become a beacon of hope to others. She has inspired many with her strength, resilience, and refusal to be silenced. Her bravery has opened conversations about domestic abuse, mental health, and the importance of standing up for victims.
What makes Thembi’s journey so remarkable is not just that she survived — but that she chose to live with purpose. She is helping others escape the same darkness she once endured. Her story is a reminder of the brutal reality of GBV in South Africa, but also of the unshakable strength that women like her carry.
Thembi Maphanga is living proof that even the deepest pain can be transformed into purpose. She has turned tragedy into triumph and silence into a powerful voice. Today, she stands tall — not just as a survivor, but as a warrior for justice and healing. 💪🏾🔥❤️
