A Grade 9 learner from Boksburg High School in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, is recovering in hospital after being stabbed during a violent incident on school grounds. According to the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), the assault occurred when a group of boys jumped over the school fence and attacked the student.
GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona confirmed the incident on Thursday, revealing that approximately eight boys were involved in the attack. “The group allegedly gained entry into the school by jumping over the fence and proceeded to stab a learner. The suspects have since been arrested and are currently detained at Boksburg Police Station. The injured learner is receiving medical treatment,” Mabona said.

He added that the department’s psychosocial support team has been dispatched to Boksburg High to provide counselling and trauma support to the victim, affected classmates, and educators. Mabona also assured the public that the department is collaborating closely with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to ensure that those responsible face the full extent of the law.
“The department is working hand in hand with law enforcement to ensure justice is served and that safety measures at the school are reviewed and strengthened to prevent future incidents,” he said.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a deeply disturbing act of violence that has no place in schools. “We are deeply saddened by this violent act and wish the injured learner a full and speedy recovery,” Chiloane said. “We urge communities to play an active role in preventing such acts and ensuring that our schools remain safe spaces for teaching and learning. We commend the swift action by law enforcement agencies in responding to this senseless crime.”
This incident comes amid growing concern over violent behaviour and bullying in South African schools. Recent weeks have seen several reports of physical assaults and intimidation among learners, sparking calls for tighter school security and more community involvement in promoting non-violence.
In a separate incident, the GDE said it was alarmed by a video circulating on social media showing a girl learner being physically and verbally attacked by a boy learner at Christian Progressive College in Pretoria. Mabona said the department has launched an investigation into the matter. “The Department strongly condemns this violent incident and is investigating the circumstances surrounding it. Psychosocial support will be extended to the victim and other affected learners,” he said.
He confirmed that school management at Christian Progressive College will initiate disciplinary proceedings against the implicated learner.
As the GDE continues to grapple with the surge of school-related violence, parents and educators are being urged to remain vigilant and report any signs of aggression or bullying before they escalate. The department reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing a zero-tolerance policy toward any form of violence in Gauteng schools.
