A 64-year-old man narrowly escaped death after being viciously attacked by a swarm of bees while cutting grass in Cottonlands, Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred when the man, who was carrying out routine maintenance work on a property, unknowingly disturbed a hidden beehive. The sudden disturbance provoked the swarm, which descended upon him in a coordinated attack, stinging his face, arms, and body multiple times.

According to reports, nearby residents were alerted by the man’s screams for help. Within minutes, the situation turned dire as the worker collapsed and became unresponsive from the intensity of the stings. Concerned witnesses immediately contacted Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) around 08:24 to report the emergency.
Reaction Officers and RUSA paramedics were quickly dispatched to the scene. Upon their arrival, they found the victim lying on the ground — still conscious but in visible distress. Witnesses later explained that the man had attempted to “play dead” to discourage the bees from continuing their attack.
RUSA spokespersons confirmed that despite the severe stings, the man was fortunate to have survived the ordeal. “He sustained numerous stings across his face and upper body. Reaction Officers, together with a local resident, managed to rescue him and move him out of immediate danger,” said the responders.
Paramedics on site provided urgent medical treatment, including antihistamine injections and oxygen support to counter the allergic reactions triggered by the stings. Once stabilized, the victim was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further evaluation and care.

Local residents expressed shock over the incident, noting that bee attacks in the area are not uncommon, especially during the spring and summer seasons when hives become active. One resident said, “We always see bees around here, but we didn’t expect something like this to happen. He’s lucky to be alive.”
Experts have since warned the public to exercise caution when working outdoors or near overgrown areas where bee colonies might be nesting. Beekeepers advise that swarming bees are particularly aggressive when they perceive a threat to their hive. Anyone who accidentally disturbs a hive is urged to retreat calmly and avoid swatting at the insects, as sudden movements can provoke further aggression.
This terrifying event serves as a reminder of how dangerous bee encounters can be, especially for individuals who work outdoors. The man’s quick thinking — pretending to be motionless — likely saved his life until help arrived.
He remains under medical observation but is expected to make a full recovery.
Authorities have since urged property owners in Cottonlands and surrounding areas to inspect trees, fences, and storage structures for possible hives, and to call professional beekeepers for safe removal when necessary.
