A remarkable story of courage, perseverance, and determination has emerged from Limpopo, where 24-year-old Lethabo Maleka has defied the odds to achieve academic excellence. Hailing from Ga-Mphahlele, Maleka recently graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Limpopo, marking a significant milestone in a journey shaped by adversity and resilience.
Maleka’s life changed dramatically at the age of 10 following a traumatic incident involving a spitting cobra. While using a pit toilet, he encountered the snake, which sprayed venom into his eyes. The incident caused severe damage to his vision, and over time, he gradually lost his sight completely. For many, such a life-altering experience could have meant the end of their dreams—but for Maleka, it became the beginning of a new path defined by determination.

In the aftermath of losing his sight, Maleka initially struggled to continue his education due to limited support and resources. He eventually dropped out of school, facing uncertainty about his future. However, his circumstances began to change when he enrolled at Siloe School for the Blind in Polokwane. There, he learned Braille and received the support he needed to rebuild his confidence and rediscover his academic potential.
With renewed focus and determination, Maleka excelled in his studies. His hard work paid off when he matriculated from Setotolwane Secondary School, achieving an impressive average of 87.61%. His outstanding performance earned him a place among the top 20 matric achievers in South Africa in 2021, a recognition that highlighted his dedication and resilience.
His academic success did not go unnoticed. Maleka was invited to a prestigious breakfast event hosted by the Department of Basic Education, where he was honoured for his achievements. The recognition served as further motivation for him to pursue his ambitions and continue striving for excellence.
Driven by a passion for justice and a desire to make a difference in the lives of others, Maleka enrolled for an LLB degree at the University of Limpopo. Throughout his university journey, he remained committed to his goals, overcoming challenges associated with his disability through discipline, perseverance, and unwavering self-belief.
Graduating Cum Laude is a testament to Maleka’s extraordinary work ethic and determination. His achievement not only reflects academic excellence but also symbolizes the power of resilience in the face of adversity.
Maleka hopes his story will inspire others, particularly young people facing difficulties, to never give up on their dreams. He firmly believes that challenges, no matter how severe, should not define one’s future.
“Disability is not inability,” he says, a message that continues to resonate with many who hear his story.
Today, Lethabo Maleka stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration, proving that with courage, support, and determination, even the most difficult obstacles can be overcome.
