Veteran actor and comedian Kenneth Nkosi paid an emotional tribute to his late friend and Tsotsi co-star Presley Chweneyagae during a memorial service held at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria. The event drew family, friends, fans, and colleagues, all gathered to honour the life and legacy of one of South Africa’s most beloved actors.
Remembering a Humble Star
Chweneyagae, who passed away suddenly on 28 May 2025 due to respiratory complications, was best known for his lead role in Tsotsi, the Oscar-winning South African film that propelled him to international fame. Nkosi, who portrayed Aap in the film, fondly recalled their time together on set and praised Chweneyagae’s humility and lighthearted spirit.
“That is one man who never had an ego,” Nkosi said. “That boy liked to play, and he believed in what he was doing. He was young, confident, and trusted his instincts. He carried the entire story with such grace and strength.”
A Legacy Rooted in Authenticity
One of Nkosi’s most poignant memories was about Chweneyagae’s commitment to authenticity. He recounted how some viewers initially questioned the way Chweneyagae portrayed a tsotsi (street thug), claiming that real tsotsis in Soweto should have sounded like Zola 7. However, Chweneyagae brought his own interpretation from Mahikeng, and it resonated with audiences across the country.
“His portrayal was real, and that’s why people loved and connected with his character,” Nkosi said.
National Mourning and Celebrations of Life
Chweneyagae’s passing has left a significant void in the entertainment industry. Tributes have poured in on social media from fans, fellow actors, and political leaders. Actress Terry Pheto, who starred alongside Chweneyagae in Tsotsi, also gave a moving speech at the memorial, highlighting his professionalism and kind nature.
His wife, Charlaine Kirk, gave a tearful farewell during the first memorial service held in his hometown of Mafikeng. Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema visited the family home and described Chweneyagae as a “good role model” to the next generation of South African actors.
Industry Colleagues Reflect on His Impact
Actor Israel Matseke-Zulu, who also worked with Chweneyagae, described him as a grounded individual whose global success never altered his personality. “Yes, we won the Oscar and brought it home, but Presley never let that change him,” said Matseke-Zulu. “Being in Hollywood doesn’t mean you’ve reached heaven.”
He added that Chweneyagae’s love for storytelling and acting was evident in every role he took on, and that his humility and dedication were rare in the entertainment world.
A Life Worth Celebrating
Presley Chweneyagae’s legacy will live on through his work and the memories he created with those around him. His powerful performances, particularly in Tsotsi, will continue to inspire young actors across South Africa and beyond.
Kenneth Nkosi’s tribute served not only as a remembrance of a colleague but as a celebration of a true artist whose presence left an indelible mark on South African cinema.
