The community of Kraaifontein has been left devastated after the tragic death of 11-year-old Esmine Franke, who was struck and killed by a stray bullet during a suspected gang-related shooting on Tuesday evening. The incident also left two others injured, including an 8-year-old girl who is now recovering in hospital.
According to police reports, the shooting occurred around 7:20 pm in Mti Street, Wallacedene, when unknown gunmen opened fire in the area. Their intended target, a young man allegedly linked to gang activity, escaped unharmed. Instead, three innocent bystanders were caught in the crossfire, with Esmine tragically losing her life.
A Family’s Heartbreaking Loss
Esmine’s mother, Shahieda Franke, recalled the painful moment she discovered her daughter had been hit.
“We were at home when we heard gunshots. At first, we didn’t know what had happened. Then someone called me and said I must go and see her,” she said tearfully. “She was still alive when I reached her, she couldn’t speak, but she squeezed my hand. By the time the ambulance arrived, she was gone.”
Her younger brother was also injured in the shooting, sustaining wounds to his legs, while Esmine’s 8-year-old friend was shot in the back. The young girl is being treated at Tygerberg Hospital, where her condition is described as stable.
Police Confirm Gang Links
Police spokesperson FC van Wyk confirmed that the shooting is believed to be gang-related.
“According to reports, the victims were playing outside when unidentified suspects began shooting in the street. All three were struck by stray bullets. Paramedics declared the 11-year-old deceased on the scene, while the other two victims were rushed to hospital,” he said.
The suspect fled the scene and has not yet been arrested. Police are appealing to anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS app.
Community Outrage and Calls for Action
The tragedy has sparked outrage and sorrow across the community. Mawethu Sisila, chairperson of the Kraaifontein Community Policing Forum, expressed the deep shock felt by residents.
“We are heartbroken by this senseless act of violence. It appears to be gang-related, but investigations are still ongoing. What we do know is that an innocent child has lost her life, and the community is devastated,” he said.
Civil society groups have also weighed in. Siyabulela Monakali, spokesperson for women’s and children’s rights organisation Ilitha Labantu, said the tragedy underscores the urgent need to address gang violence in Cape Town’s townships.
“Gang violence is not just about criminals pulling triggers. It is rooted in poverty, inequality, and systemic neglect. Until these conditions are addressed, children will continue to die, and families will continue to grieve. This killing must serve as a wake-up call to take urgent action,” Monakali stated.
A Growing Crisis
Kraaifontein and surrounding communities have long struggled with high levels of gang activity, leaving families living in fear of stray bullets and random acts of violence. Residents say they feel abandoned by authorities and lack adequate police protection.
For Esmine’s family, the grief is immeasurable. What should have been an ordinary evening of children playing outside turned into a nightmare that will forever scar her loved ones.
As investigations continue, the community is united in demanding justice and greater efforts to make their neighbourhoods safe again.
