The South African music industry is reeling from the tragic loss of one of its most influential figures. Busani “Ntshebe” Khuzwayo, the celebrated co-founder and lead guitarist of the iconic maskandi group *Izingane Zoma*, has died at the age of 62. He passed away on Friday, 9 May, at Dundee Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal after suffering a severe stroke.
Ntshebe, known for his masterful guitar skills and charismatic stage presence, played a vital role in shaping the sound and popularity of *Izingane Zoma*. His energetic performances—marked by dramatic dance moves and theatrical falls—captivated audiences across South Africa. Fans affectionately nicknamed him “Ntshebe” due to his distinctive thick beard and would chant “Yadl’intshebe!” during his electrifying shows.
Born in Nquthu, KwaZulu-Natal, Ntshebe began his musical journey in the early ’90s. In 1993, he co-founded *Izingane Zoma* with his brother Shobeni Khuzwayo and fellow musicians Mqapheleni Magubane, Thandoluni Phungula, Tholakele Ngobese, and Nikwani Ngobese. The group went on to release more than 40 albums and became a cornerstone of the maskandi genre.
Ntshebe’s influence extended beyond his own band. His remarkable guitar techniques inspired a new generation of musicians, including his nephews Dlubheke and Falabo, both of whom have carved out successful careers. Falabo, in particular, has become the lead guitarist for renowned maskandi artist Khuzani Mpungose.
His death comes at a difficult time for the maskandi community, which is still mourning the recent passing of Dumisile Mthalane, co-founder of *Imithente*, who died on 27 April.
Ntshebe had been battling health complications since mid-2024. According to his brother Shobeni, it started with a mysterious leg wound believed to be caused by diabetes. Although he recovered from that ordeal, tragedy struck on 2 May when Ntshebe suffered a debilitating stroke. “He couldn’t speak or respond, so we rushed him to the hospital,” Shobeni recalled.
By 5 May, there were signs of improvement, and the family was hopeful about his recovery. “He was talking again and we really thought he would make it,” said Shobeni. “But today we received the heartbreaking call that he is no more.”
Throughout his career, Ntshebe received multiple accolades for his contributions to music. Among his most notable honors was the Best Guitarist Award at the Amantshontsho kaMaskandi Awards in 2016.
The legacy of Busani “Ntshebe” Khuzwayo lives on through the music he created and the many lives he touched. He leaves behind a rich cultural imprint and a grieving nation that will forever remember his artistry, spirit, and passion for maskandi music.
