A community in Sibasa, Limpopo, is reeling in disbelief and heartbreak after a trusted local pastor was arrested for allegedly assaulting a young woman inside his church — a place meant to offer hope, healing, and sanctuary.
The disturbing incident reportedly took place on July 9, 2025, when 40-year-old Sikhubu Phathutshedzo Innocent, popularly known as Pastor Muritho, allegedly lured the young woman to the church building under false pretenses. According to sources close to the investigation, the pastor allegedly locked the church doors behind her and committed the unthinkable.
The young woman, whose identity is being protected for safety and privacy reasons, kept the traumatic experience to herself for days. However, with immense courage and emotional strength, she finally confided in her family on July 19, 2025. Deeply disturbed and outraged, her loved ones immediately reported the matter to authorities.
The police acted swiftly and arrested Pastor Muritho shortly afterward. He made his first appearance in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on July 21, where the state requested additional time for further investigation. The court ordered that he remain in custody until his next appearance on July 30, 2025.
The allegations have sparked widespread outrage in the community and beyond, raising serious concerns about the abuse of trust and power within religious institutions. For many, this incident is a chilling reminder of how predators can hide behind positions of authority, using religion as a mask to gain access to vulnerable individuals.
Community leaders and local residents have expressed their devastation and disbelief. “We are heartbroken. A church is supposed to be a place of peace, guidance, and safety. For this to happen inside a church is just unbearable,” one resident shared.
Meanwhile, organizations that support victims of abuse have called for greater protection measures for young people, especially within religious environments. Calls are growing for churches and faith-based institutions to implement strict safeguarding policies, including background checks for all leaders and regular training on ethics and abuse prevention.
The victim’s family is receiving support from trauma counselors and social workers, as they work to help her navigate the healing process. Many have praised her bravery for speaking up — a courageous act that may inspire others in similar situations to come forward.
As the investigation continues, the nation watches closely, hoping for justice to prevail. The incident has sparked important conversations about the role of the church, the responsibility of its leaders, and the urgent need to prioritize the safety of all congregants — especially women and children.
This tragic event has left a deep scar, but it also serves as a powerful reminder that silence can be broken, and justice can be sought — even in the darkest of places.
