Family Frustrated Over Lack of Accountability

The Maimela family from Mokgokong village, Limpopo, is demanding justice following the tragic death of their son, Joseph Maimela, a Grade 12 pupil at Kgabo Secondary School. Joseph took his own life in October last year, allegedly due to bullying by teachers who reportedly shared his progress report card with the entire school community.

His grieving family has expressed their anger and frustration over the lack of response from the Department of Education regarding an internal investigation into the alleged misconduct.

Family’s Plea for Answers

Speaking to SABC News, Joseph’s sister, Annah Maimela, accused the department of failing to communicate any updates regarding their pursuit of justice.

“Our biggest concern as a family is that the department has not provided us with any feedback or updates on what is happening,” Annah stated.

  • She added that despite burying her brother months ago, the department has not engaged with them or provided any accountability for those involved.

“We have sought legal counsel and have family representation, but the problem lies in the department’s lack of transparency. They are sending us from pillar to post,” she said.

Education Department Responds

Limpopo education department spokesperson, Mike Maringa, assured that the investigation is nearing completion.

“We can confirm that the investigation was conducted and concluded. The case is now in its final stages at the head office,” Maringa said.

He mentioned that the individuals implicated in the case are yet to be formally notified but confirmed that disciplinary action will follow soon.

The Growing Concern of Youth Suicide

Basic Education Department spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga, highlighted that suicide remains a significant global health concern, with South Africa being no exception.

According to data from the health department, between April and December 2023, approximately 7,426 children under the age of 18 received medical treatment after attempting to take their own lives.

“This data highlights the urgent need for comprehensive and coordinated efforts to address mental health challenges and prevent suicide among young people,” Mhlanga stated.

Call for Mental Health Awareness

Joseph Maimela’s tragic death has once again raised concerns about the need for better mental health awareness and support in schools. The Maimela family continues to seek justice and accountability, hoping their loss will drive meaningful change to protect other learners from similar situations.

As the education department finalizes its investigation, the family, along with the community, is anxiously awaiting answers and tangible action against those responsible.
