A dramatic rescue unfolded on Saturday afternoon in eThekwini when a 22-year-old man was saved from the swollen Oakford River after allegedly attempting to take his own life by drowning.

The incident occurred around 2:47 p.m., prompting a swift response from Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA). Officers Siya Mthethwa and Bryson Bisnath bravely entered the fast-flowing waters to carry out the rescue, while additional aerial support was summoned via the RUSA helicopter.

The young man was reportedly highly intoxicated at the time of the incident. He was found drifting downstream toward Hazelmere Dam, holding onto a piece of polystyrene to stay afloat. Despite the strength of the current, the officers managed to reach him and bring him safely to shore.

Once on land, paramedics who had been standing by on the riverbank quickly assessed the man’s condition. Fortunately, he sustained no serious injuries and was later reunited with his family.

Family members revealed that the man had been drinking heavily after a domestic dispute, which led to his suicide attempt. Overcome by emotions and under the influence of alcohol, he entered the dangerous river in what appeared to be a desperate cry for help.

According to the relatives, the incident shocked the family deeply. After the rescue, emotions reportedly ran high, with family members confronting the man about his actions. Though details remain unofficial, the family reportedly expressed their frustration physically before focusing on getting him the help he needs.

This incident has once again highlighted the importance of mental health awareness and the devastating impact personal conflicts can have when left unaddressed. The quick actions of RUSA and the bravery of the officers on the scene prevented what could have been a tragic ending.

Local authorities are urging individuals experiencing emotional distress to seek support from professionals or reach out to loved ones instead of resorting to drastic measures. The man’s rescue serves as both a sobering reminder of the fragility of life and a testament to the heroic efforts of emergency responders.
