Police have escalated efforts to track down one of South Africa’s most wanted criminals, Linda Hlongwa, following a chilling double murder in Pinetown. Hlongwa, widely known by his street names “Mjinja” or “Putin,” has been on the run since September 2024 after being positively linked to the brutal killing of his 22-year-old girlfriend and her 52-year-old mother.
The Pinetown Magistrate’s Court issued a warrant for Hlongwa’s arrest late last year, and despite ongoing investigations, he has managed to evade authorities. Police recently confirmed that Hlongwa is the primary suspect in the murders that occurred on Income Road in the Nazareth area of Pinetown. It is believed he pulled the trigger in what law enforcement has described as a cold-blooded attack.
Community members have been urged to assist law enforcement by providing any information that could lead to his capture. Authorities warn that Hlongwa is considered armed and extremely dangerous. Residents are advised not to approach or confront him under any circumstances.
This is not the first time Hlongwa has found himself on the wrong side of the law. He was previously arrested in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition. At the time, he was released on bail pending the results of ballistic tests. However, he failed to comply with court orders and has since ignored all summons to reappear in court, ultimately prompting the issuance of his arrest warrant.
The police have emphasized the importance of public cooperation in this case, especially given the serious nature of the charges and the risk the suspect poses to the community. Colonel Sikhakhane, who is leading the investigation, has urged anyone with information about Hlongwa’s whereabouts to come forward.
