The Muslim community in Cape Town is reeling after the fatal shooting of respected religious leader Moulana Mustaqeem Wanza on the first night of Ramadan.
Wanza was gunned down on Wednesday evening shortly after leading Taraweeh prayers at the Salaamudien Masjid in Lentegeur, Mitchells Plain. The tragic incident unfolded outside the mosque, casting a shadow over what is traditionally a sacred and joyous time for Muslims around the world.
According to mosque leadership, Wanza had just completed leading Salatul Taraweeh — special nightly prayers performed during the holy month of Ramadan — when the attack occurred. The shooting happened in Candytuft Street as he was making his way to the home of a colleague.

Community organisation Aswaatul Islam confirmed that Wanza was shot multiple times. It is alleged that the occupants of a white VW Polo stopped near him and opened fire, shooting him eight times before fleeing the scene.
At this stage, authorities have not released further details regarding suspects or a possible motive. The mosque’s Imaamat and Committee said they are awaiting the outcome of a full police investigation.
“In this difficult time, we do not have confirmed details about the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the mosque leadership said in a statement. “We will allow the relevant authorities to conduct a full investigation, and we trust that due process will take its course.”
Tributes have poured in from across the Western Cape and beyond, with many describing Wanza as a deeply respected and influential figure in the Muslim community.
Aswaatul Islam paid tribute to him as “a deeply respected soul whose presence, guidance and kindness touched so many lives.” The organisation added that his legacy, teachings and positive impact on the community would never be forgotten.
The Darul Ulama Association also expressed shock and sorrow at his death, describing him as a respected alumnus whose melodious recitation of the Quran resonated in mosques throughout the Western Cape and other parts of the country.
“He was an inspiration to many of our youth to pursue the path of the Quran,” the association said. “The incident took place as Moulana completed leading Salatul Taraweeh on the very first night of this blessed month of Ramadan.”
Ramadan is regarded as one of the holiest months in the Islamic calendar, a time marked by fasting, prayer, reflection and community gatherings. The violence that claimed Wanza’s life has left many worshippers devastated, particularly as it occurred during a sacred period dedicated to peace and spiritual renewal.
Police are expected to continue their investigation as the community mourns the loss of a leader remembered for his humility, dedication and service.
The incident remains under investigation.
