A devastating weekend on Mpumalanga roads has left nine people dead, including a young child, in two separate but equally horrifying road accidents.
The first accident occurred on the R23 road between Greylingstad and Val on Friday night, 27 June. According to Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, a BMW and a VW sedan collided head-on. Both vehicles were carrying three occupants each, and all six individuals were declared dead at the scene.
“Five of the victims were males, and one female was a passenger in the VW sedan,” Mmusi confirmed. “The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but preliminary evidence suggests that reckless driving behaviours such as excessive speeding and dangerous overtaking may have played a significant role.”
Emergency responders arrived to a chaotic and heartbreaking scene, with wreckage scattered across the road and no survivors from either vehicle. The crash site has sparked renewed calls for responsible driving, especially at night when visibility and reaction times are compromised.
Just hours later, tragedy struck again—this time on the N4 toll road near Makro in Mbombela. A sedan carrying five people collided head-on with a heavy motor vehicle. The impact killed three people instantly: the driver, a passenger, and a child. The other two occupants sustained serious injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.
Mmusi confirmed that investigations into both accidents are underway and will focus on possible violations of traffic laws, road conditions, and the actions of those involved.
In the wake of these fatalities, Mpumalanga Community Safety MEC Jackie Macie issued a stern reminder to motorists about the critical need to follow road safety regulations at all times. “Every driver has a responsibility to comply with traffic rules,” he said. “Reckless driving, including speeding and overtaking in unsafe conditions, continues to be among the top causes of fatal road accidents. We urge all road users to remain vigilant, particularly during evening and night travel.”
Macie emphasized that the government remains committed to enforcing road safety but that the responsibility also lies with individual drivers to make better choices behind the wheel.
