A member of the South African Police Service (SAPS) has been promoted in recognition of his extraordinary courage after he was shot while intervening in an armed robbery — despite being off duty at the time.
Warrant Officer TM Mnisi has officially been elevated to the rank of Captain following his brave actions during a robbery at a Boxer store in Orange Farm on the evening of 12 December 2025. His swift response and willingness to place himself in danger to protect members of the public have been widely praised by both SAPS leadership and the local community.
According to reports, Mnisi had completed his shift and was travelling home when he came across what appeared to be a robbery in progress at the busy retail outlet. Instead of driving past the scene, he immediately assessed the situation and chose to act.
It is alleged that several armed suspects were attempting to flee the store when Mnisi intervened. Using his SAPS vehicle, he strategically blocked their escape route in an effort to prevent them from getting away. At the same time, he radioed for backup to ensure additional support would arrive as quickly as possible.
During the confrontation, the suspects allegedly opened fire. Mnisi was struck in the back right shoulder amid the exchange of gunfire. Despite sustaining a serious injury, he remained composed and focused. Demonstrating remarkable resilience, he managed to drive himself to Stretford Clinic, where he received medical treatment.
Authorities have commended Mnisi for his decisive actions under extremely dangerous circumstances. SAPS leadership described his conduct as a clear example of dedication to duty, even when not formally on the clock. His bravery, they said, reflects the core values of the police service — commitment, integrity, and the protection of communities.
Community members in Orange Farm have also expressed admiration for Mnisi, highlighting the risks police officers face daily. Many have described him as a hero who put the safety of others ahead of his own well-being.
