A bizarre and unsettling burglary in the usually peaceful suburb of Parkgate, KwaZulu-Natal, has left a local pet owner distraught after his beloved Albino Snow Corn Snake was stolen during a break-in on Friday, 5 December 2025. The owner, who has chosen to remain anonymous, told authorities he left for work early that morning with his pet safely secured inside his home. But upon his return later in the day, he found clear signs of forced entry.
According to the victim, the security gate guarding the entrance to his property had been violently damaged, indicating that an intruder had deliberately targeted his home. What made the incident even more unusual was that nothing inside the house appeared to be disturbed or stolen—except for one item: his eight-month-old snake, affectionately known as Gumede.
Gumede, a non-venomous Albino Snow Corn Snake, is described as a striking reptile with pale pink scales patterned with soft white detailing. Measuring approximately 60 centimetres in length, he is easy to identify, especially due to his distinctive bright red eyes. The owner stressed that Gumede poses no threat to the public, noting that corn snakes are harmless and commonly kept as pets.
Police investigators have confirmed that no valuables, electronics, or household items were taken, strengthening the belief that the intruder had a very specific motive. With no other losses reported, authorities are now treating the incident as a targeted theft rather than a random crime or opportunistic burglary.
