A 34-year-old nurse from Pietermaritzburg, Aleyka Shaik, who was pregnant with twins, was brutally killed on Sunday evening while carrying out a routine task of collecting her young daughter. The shocking incident has left the local community devastated and renewed concerns about the ongoing crisis of violence against women in South Africa.

According to reports, the tragic attack occurred shortly after 6pm in the Northdale area. Shaik had gone to fetch her seven-year-old daughter and was in the process of placing the child into a vehicle outside a residence linked to the suspect when she was confronted and attacked. It is alleged that an argument broke out between Shaik and the suspect, which quickly escalated into violence. The suspect allegedly stabbed her during the altercation, resulting in her death at the scene.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that a 39-year-old man has since been arrested in connection with the incident. He stated that initial reports suggest a dispute between the victim and the suspect led to the fatal stabbing. The accused is expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court as investigations continue.
The killing of Shaik has not only shocked residents but also deeply affected those who knew her personally. Pietermaritzburg PR councillor Shamiell Ally, who had known Shaik for several years, expressed his heartbreak over the incident. He described receiving the news of her death as both shocking and devastating.

Ally recalled that he first met Shaik in 2017 when her father began working as a dispatcher for the municipality. Over the years, he came to know her as a caring and dedicated individual who placed her family above everything else. As an only child, Shaik was deeply committed to her parents, ensuring they were well cared for and supported. She would personally transport her father to and from work daily, demonstrating her devotion and sense of responsibility.
He also spoke about the painful experience of arriving at the scene shortly after the attack, describing it as heartbreaking to witness such a violent end to the life of someone he regarded as kind and compassionate. The fact that she was pregnant at the time made the incident even more distressing for those present.
In the aftermath of the attack, community members and local councillors reportedly mobilised in an effort to locate the suspect, who had initially fled the scene. Their efforts, combined with police action, led to the suspect’s swift arrest.
Ally further highlighted the broader issue of gender-based violence, stating that incidents like these are becoming increasingly common and alarming. He emphasised that Shaik’s death was senseless and has left a young child without her mother.
Described by those who knew her as a devoted parent and a “super mum,” Shaik’s passing has left a painful void in the lives of her loved ones. Her tragic death serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address violence against women and protect vulnerable members of society.
