Johannesburg, 27 August 2025 – The South African media fraternity is mourning the loss of one of its most respected political journalists, Tshidi Madia, who passed away in hospital on Wednesday morning after a short illness. Madia, who served as Eyewitness News’ (EWN) Associate Editor for Politics, was remembered as a fearless journalist, a mentor, and a guiding voice in the country’s political discourse.
Primedia Broadcasting confirmed her passing with deep sorrow, describing her as “a powerhouse” and “the jewel in EWN’s crown.” EWN Editor-in-Chief Nisa Allie said Madia’s relentless pursuit of truth and her ability to lead by example made her an irreplaceable figure in South African journalism. “She mentored many young journalists, built a formidable political team, and delivered one exclusive after another with humility and professionalism. The newsroom will not be the same without her,” Allie said.
Primedia’s Chief Content Officer, Mzo Jojwana, highlighted her role in shaping how South Africans understood politics. “Tshidi made sense of and guided us through the political narrative. She asked tough but fair questions and always approached her work with empathy, ensuring that ordinary citizens could connect with the political landscape,” he noted.
Tributes also came from Primedia’s Group CEO Jonathan Procter, who described her as a rare force in the media industry, respected across political circles. “Her style was unique – she held those in power to account with fierce charm. She was deeply connected, with an extraordinary network of political contacts nurtured over the years,” Procter said.
Beyond her journalism, colleagues remembered her for her warmth, sharp wit, and loyalty to family and friends. “She worked hard and loved even harder. The sun shines differently without you today, Matshidiso,” Allie said in her tribute.
A Trailblazing Career
Madia’s path in journalism began at EWN’s traffic desk as an assistant, before joining Power FM as a reporter and presenter. She later moved to News24, where she became a leading voice in political reporting, before returning “home” to EWN as a senior political reporter. Her talent and dedication saw her rise to Associate Editor: Politics, where she shaped some of the country’s most impactful political coverage.
She was also the host of the widely followed podcast Politricking with Tshidi Madia, where she engaged with leaders across the political spectrum. Known for her fearless yet respectful interviews, she became a trusted voice for millions of South Africans.
Her career highlights included an exclusive interview with President Cyril Ramaphosa ahead of the 2024 elections, and a determined pursuit of former President Jacob Zuma for a one-on-one interview at Nkandla. Earlier this year, she also reported from the Oval Office in Washington, covering a meeting between Ramaphosa and then-U.S. President Donald Trump.
A Legacy That Endures
Madia’s impact stretched far beyond headlines. Raised in a politically engaged household, she pursued journalism at the University of Johannesburg, earning her degree in 2008. Her life’s work embodied courage, integrity, and passion for the truth.
“She was a beacon of hope in the darkest of nights,” Allie concluded, quoting a message Madia had once shared.
Tshidi Madia leaves behind a legacy of fearless journalism, mentorship, and a commitment to giving South Africans clarity in times of political uncertainty. She will be remembered not only by her colleagues at Primedia, but also by the countless listeners, viewers, and readers whose lives she touched.
