The tragic loss of 17-year-old Lethukuthula Amanda Masango has left her family, friends, and community in deep mourning. Her lifeless body was discovered in KaNyamazane, Mpumalanga, on 14 March 2025, in a heartbreaking incident that once again highlights the urgent crisis of gender-based violence in South Africa.
A Life Cut Short
Lethukuthula, a dedicated Grade 12 student, left home early in the morning to catch a bus to school. She never arrived at her destination. When her mother reported her missing later that afternoon, a community member informed her of the devastating news—Lethukuthula had been found, but she was no longer alive.
According to reports, her body was discovered with a rope around her neck, still dressed in her school uniform. The shocking details of the case have left many questioning the safety of young women in South Africa.
A Suspect in Custody
Authorities have since arrested a 23-year-old suspect in connection with her murder. Allegedly, he was seen attempting to sell Lethukuthula’s phone for a mere R100. His arrest brings hope for justice, but it does not erase the pain of yet another life stolen too soon.
Enough is Enough: Call for Action
Lethukuthula’s murder is not an isolated incident. She is yet another victim of the ongoing femicide and gender-based violence epidemic in South Africa. How many more lives must be lost before real action is taken?
We cannot remain silent. It is time to declare GBV and femicide a National Disaster. We urge everyone to stand with us and demand change.
