South Africa is mourning the untimely death of rising rowing star Kerry Grundlingh, who tragically lost her life in a cycling accident in Johannesburg. The 21-year-old was visiting family during her summer break from Princeton University in the United States when the accident occurred.
Grundlingh was not only a talented athlete but also an exceptional academic, making waves both at home and abroad. A proud alumna of St Mary’s School in Waverley, Johannesburg, Kerry matriculated in 2022 before joining Princeton’s prestigious rowing program.
In a heartfelt statement, St Mary’s confirmed the devastating news:
“Kerry lost her life in a cycling accident while visiting family and friends in Johannesburg during the American university summer holidays.”
At Princeton, Kerry was a standout in the women’s open rowing team. She earned multiple accolades during her collegiate career. In 2024, she helped the second varsity eight win bronze at the Ivy League Championships and placed sixth at the NCAA Championships. This year, she rowed in the first varsity eight that clinched gold at the Ivies and triumphed in the Petite Final at the NCAA nationals.
Kerry’s impact extended far beyond the university campus. She represented South Africa at the World Rowing Championships and was admired for her commitment, discipline, and vibrant spirit.
Princeton head coach Lori Dauphiny paid tribute to the young star, describing her as:
“A tremendous daughter, sister, friend, and teammate. Kerry consistently gave her best to the betterment of others in every daily interaction.”
Messages of condolence poured in from Rowing South Africa, Princeton University, and St Mary’s School, all highlighting Kerry’s warmth, determination, and the legacy she leaves behind.
In a moving email to students and faculty, Dean of Undergraduate Students Regan Crotty wrote:
“Our entire community is grieving this tragedy, and our hearts go out to Kerry’s family, loved ones, friends, and teammates on the women’s open rowing team.”
Rowing South Africa also expressed its sorrow, saying:
“She left an unfilled space in those who had the honour of knowing her.”
Kerry Grundlingh joins a list of South African sporting greats lost in 2025, including rugby legends Des van Jaarsveldt and Cornel Hendricks, Kaizer Chiefs icon Simon ‘Bull’ Lehoko, and Orlando Pirates stalwart Donald “DD” Dhliwayo.
Her passing has left not just the rowing community but the entire nation shaken, as many remember a life that promised so much more. Kerry’s dedication, sportsmanship, and vibrant soul will never be forgotten.
🕊 Rest in peace, Kerry. You rowed with strength, purpose, and grace — both in the water and through life.
