On Friday, February 7, 2025, a South African National Defence Force (SANDF) vehicle overturned on the R31 between Koopmansfontein and Delportshoop in the Northern Cape, resulting in the deaths of two military personnel—a male and a female. Seventeen additional occupants sustained injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The incident occurred as the group was traveling from the Lohatla Army Base, known for its Combat Training Centre, to Kimberley. At the time of the accident, the region was experiencing wet weather conditions, though the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Police spokesperson Lt-Col Sergio Kock confirmed that authorities have initiated a culpable homicide investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the accident. The identities of the deceased are being withheld until their next of kin have been notified.
A video shared on social media by user @Wanda_MW shows the aftermath of the crash, with personnel and civilians gathered around the overturned vehicle.
This tragic event underscores the risks faced by SANDF members during both training and operational activities. The investigation aims to provide clarity and prevent future occurrences.
