A routine patrol mission turned tragic after one South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldier lost his life and another went missing while attempting to cross a flooded river near Komatipoort in Mpumalanga. The incident occurred on Thursday during Operation Corona, a border safeguarding operation aimed at maintaining security and preventing illegal cross-border activities.
According to the SANDF, the incident happened in the Macadamia area outside Komatipoort when a Military Police vehicle encountered a river that had become dangerously swollen following heavy rainfall. Despite the patrol being part of standard operational duties, the powerful current proved overwhelming. As the vehicle attempted to cross, two soldiers were swept away by the fast-moving water.
In a statement released on Saturday, the SANDF confirmed that the body of one soldier has since been recovered. Search and rescue teams continue to work tirelessly to locate the second soldier, who remains missing. The defence force described the incident as a devastating loss and acknowledged the dangers faced by soldiers while carrying out their responsibilities under challenging environmental conditions.
The search operation is being led by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Diving Rescue Team, which has been deployed to comb the river and surrounding areas. The mission is being supported by an SANDF Oryx helicopter, providing aerial surveillance to assist ground and water-based teams. Authorities have indicated that efforts will continue until the missing soldier is found.
Senior government and defence officials have expressed their condolences following the tragedy. Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Angie Motshekga, together with Chief of the SANDF General Rudzani Maphwanya, extended heartfelt sympathy to the family of the deceased soldier. They also conveyed their support to the family of the missing member, assuring them that every possible resource is being used in the ongoing search.
“The loss of a soldier in the line of duty is a painful reminder of the sacrifices made by members of the SANDF,” the statement read. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected families during this incredibly difficult time.”
The SANDF also appealed to members of the public and the media to exercise patience and sensitivity while operations are underway. Officials emphasised the importance of allowing rescue teams to work without disruption and ensuring that families receive official communication and support before further details are shared publicly.
Recent heavy rains across parts of Mpumalanga and neighbouring regions have led to widespread flooding, making rivers and low-lying crossings particularly hazardous. Authorities have urged both civilians and security personnel to exercise extreme caution when navigating flooded areas, as water levels can rise rapidly and currents can be deceptively strong.
As the search continues, the incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by South Africa’s security forces while performing their duties. The SANDF reiterated its commitment to supporting the affected families and ensuring that the fallen soldier is honoured for his service to the country.
