Authorities are urging motorists to exercise patience and caution on the roads, especially during wet weather conditions, following a rise in traffic accidents.
Serious Collision on Tonkmeter Road
A severe accident took place on Tonkmeter Road in Springs, Ekurhuleni, on Wednesday, February 19. The crash involved a scholar transport vehicle and a Hyundai Getz in a head-on collision.
According to acting Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) chief Julius Mkhwanazi, the scholar transport was carrying approximately 10 schoolchildren at the time of the accident.
Witness Account of the Accident
“A witness alleged that the scholar transport, which was a microbus, attempted to overtake vehicles due to heavy traffic. It crossed the barrier line into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with the Hyundai Getz,” said Mkhwanazi.
The Hyundai Getz was driven by a female motorist who had her child as a passenger. Both the scholar transport driver and the Hyundai Getz driver sustained severe injuries in the crash.
Medical Response and Injuries
Emergency services responded swiftly, transporting all the children to N17 Hospital for medical evaluation. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, and the children were admitted for precautionary observation.
Authorities Urge Caution on Wet Roads
Following the accident, EMPD has reminded motorists to be extra cautious on wet roads and to avoid risky driving behaviors, such as overtaking in unsafe conditions.
“We urge drivers to exercise patience and adhere to road regulations to prevent further accidents,” added Mkhwanazi.
With the increase in road accidents due to rainy conditions, authorities are emphasizing the importance of responsible driving to ensure the safety of all road users.
