The Sekano family in Naledi, Soweto, has made an emotional appeal to residents to assist police in tracking down the people responsible for the killing of their son, Thabo Sekano.
According to details shared with Jozi FM News, Thabo was in Chiawelo on Friday night visiting a friend when the tragic incident unfolded. What began as an ordinary evening between friends ended in violence, leaving a family devastated and a community shaken.

Thabo and his friend were reportedly sitting inside a vehicle parked outside the friend’s yard when two unknown men walked past them. At first, there appeared to be nothing unusual about the encounter. However, Thabo allegedly voiced his unease, expressing concern that the men might return and cause trouble.
His fears would soon prove justified.
The friend explained that after walking a few metres away, the two suspects turned back toward the vehicle. It is alleged that they then produced firearms, creating a terrifying situation. Fearing for their lives, the two friends fled from the vehicle in an attempt to escape the armed men.
In the chaos that followed, Thabo and his friend became separated. The friend later stated that moments after running, he could no longer see Thabo. Concerned and confused, he sought help from others nearby.

When assistance arrived at the scene outside the Chiawelo home, the situation had taken a darker turn. The vehicle in which they had been sitting was gone, and Thabo was nowhere to be found. It became clear that something far more serious had occurred.
The worst was later confirmed.
Thabo Sekano’s body was discovered near an informal settlement in Lenasia South. Authorities confirmed that he had been murdered. The incident is believed to be linked to a hijacking, though investigations are still ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding his death.
The Sekano family has described the loss as unbearable and is pleading with anyone who may have seen or heard anything related to the incident to come forward. They believe that members of the community may hold crucial information that could help police identify and apprehend the suspects.
Police have opened cases of murder and car hijacking. Investigations are underway as officers work to piece together the events of that night and track down those responsible.
The family, together with Thabo’s friend, is urging residents not to remain silent. They have appealed to anyone with information — no matter how small it may seem — to report it to the authorities.
Community members with relevant information are encouraged to contact their nearest police station or call the Crime Stop Hotline on 08600 10111.
As the Sekano family mourns the tragic loss of their son, they hope that justice will prevail and that those responsible for his death will be brought to account.
