Akhonamathemba Mbele, better known to fans as Sweet Guluva and the winner of Big Brother Mzansi Season 5, received an overwhelming homecoming celebration at the Nquthu Sportsground in KwaZulu-Natal. Despite the rainy skies and muddy grounds, thousands of supporters gathered to honor their local hero in an emotional and joyous event that will be remembered for years to come.

The event was a true testament to Sweet Guluva’s influence and popularity, as fans from all over South Africa—including provinces like Gauteng and the Northern Cape—made the long journey to be part of the celebration. From the moment he stepped onto the field, the love and admiration from his supporters was undeniable.

Several of Sweet Guluva’s former housemates, including Philile Nzama from Durban and Mmelesi “Melino” Mothei from Johannesburg, joined the festivities, showing their continued support and friendship. The unity and excitement among the crowd reflected the deep impact Sweet Guluva has had not only as a reality TV personality but also as a symbol of community pride.

A particularly moving moment came when Sweet Guluva was presented with a cheque for R50,000, a gift collected by his dedicated fan base, the “Sweet Gs.” The donation was spearheaded by Fundasani Mjakada, president of the Gauteng chapter of Sweet Gs, who launched a live campaign earlier in the week to gather contributions.

“We knew he wouldn’t receive the R2 million immediately, so we wanted to do something now,” explained Mjakada. “Our goal was R100K, but reaching R50K already shows that it’s not about the money—it’s about the love.”

In addition to the speeches and tributes, the crowd was treated to electrifying performances by popular local musicians, including Mthandeni SK and Aubrey Qwana, turning the homecoming into a festive music experience. The celebratory atmosphere highlighted the community’s pride in Sweet Guluva’s success and his journey from humble beginnings to national stardom.

Nquthu Councilor IL Shabalala praised the reality TV star for putting their town on the map. “You didn’t just do this for yourself; you did it for all of us,” Shabalala said. “We are proud, and we also thank your family for raising you with values of respect and humanity.”

Among the many heartfelt moments, one fan, Nonkululeko Sabela, shared her dedication. Traveling all the way from the Northern Cape, she said, “I’ve supported him from day one. He’s my homeboy, and even though I live far, I had to come and celebrate this moment with him.”

Sweet Guluva, visibly emotional, addressed the crowd with gratitude. “I don’t have enough words to thank you. This stadium is full because of me—and that means everything. Thank you for believing in me, and let’s continue supporting each other.”

Sweet Guluva’s homecoming proved that he is more than a TV star—he’s a beacon of hope and pride for Nquthu and beyond.
