A devastating road accident in the Eastern Cape has claimed the lives of three people, leaving families grieving and authorities urging motorists to exercise greater caution on the roads. The fatal crash occurred in the early hours of Friday morning along the R67 between Seymour and Whittlesea, an area known for its quiet but sometimes hazardous night-time driving conditions.
According to the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, the collision took place at approximately 01:00 and involved two vehicles—an SUV carrying three occupants and a sedan with a single driver. The impact of the crash was severe, resulting in catastrophic damage and a fire that engulfed one of the vehicles.
Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose confirmed that two individuals traveling in the SUV tragically lost their lives after the vehicle caught fire. The intensity of the blaze left little chance of survival for the occupants trapped inside. However, in what has been described as a remarkable act of courage and survival, a 13-year-old boy who was also in the SUV managed to escape the burning wreckage. Despite sustaining injuries, he reportedly crawled out of the vehicle and was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.
Meanwhile, the driver of the sedan, who was alone at the time of the accident, succumbed to injuries at the scene. Emergency responders arrived promptly, but the severity of the crash meant that there was little they could do to save the victims.
Law enforcement authorities have since opened a case of culpable homicide as part of an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Officials are working to determine the exact cause, including whether factors such as speed, driver fatigue, or road conditions may have contributed to the tragedy.
Eastern Cape Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died. He also extended well wishes to the injured teenager, hoping for his full and speedy recovery.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with late-night and early-morning travel, particularly on regional roads. Binqose described the accident as a sobering reminder of the risks motorists face and stressed the importance of responsible driving at all times.
Authorities are calling on road users to remain vigilant, obey traffic laws, and avoid reckless behaviour that could endanger lives. “No journey is worth a life,” Binqose emphasized, reinforcing the department’s ongoing message about road safety.
