Clarifying the Speculation

Puseletso Mate, a renowned traditional healer from Winterveld, Tshwane—commonly known as Malepona—has dismissed widespread rumors about her potential successor. At 35 years old, Malepona made it clear that she is not currently training anyone to take over her spiritual role. She emphasized that if a successor is meant to emerge, it will be revealed to her by amadlozi (ancestors), rather than being a decision she makes herself.

The Unique Healing Practices of Malepona

Malepona has gained significant attention for her unconventional approach to traditional healing. A striking aspect of her practice is that she performs her rituals unclothed. She explains that this is not done for spectacle but as a way of maintaining a pure and direct connection with her ancestors. According to her beliefs, clothing represents worldly distractions that can interfere with the flow of ancestral energy.

Her unique approach has drawn both admiration and curiosity, with some questioning the origins of her methods. However, Malepona remains firm in her spiritual convictions, asserting that every aspect of her practice is guided by her ancestral lineage.

The Sacred Python and Its Role in Her Work

A central and mystical element of Malepona’s healing practice is her sacred python. The snake, which she inherited from her grandmother, holds deep spiritual significance. She believes that the python acts as a bridge between her and her ancestors, enhancing her ability to heal and guide those who seek her assistance.

One of the most fascinating aspects of this connection is that the python sometimes disappears for extended periods, often for months at a time. Malepona is unfazed by this, explaining that the creature retreats to visit the ancestors. According to her, the snake’s absence is a necessary process that allows it to “recharge” spiritually before returning to continue its sacred duty.

A Legacy Guided by Ancestors

While speculation about her successor continues, Malepona remains focused on her healing work. She insists that no apprentice can simply be appointed; rather, the ancestors will choose the next person to carry on her spiritual legacy when the time is right. Until then, she continues to practice her traditional healing with dedication, guided by the wisdom of those who came before her.

Her story highlights the deep-rooted traditions of African spiritual healing, where the role of a healer is not merely passed down by choice but is determined by ancestral guidance. Whether through her rituals, her unique spiritual connection, or her sacred python, Malepona remains a powerful and enigmatic figure in traditional healing.
