A family in Gubhuza, St Faiths near Port Shepstone in KwaZulu-Natal is reeling in shock and grief after the brutal murder of a grandmother and her grandson, whose bodies were discovered in a shallow grave on their homestead.
The victims have been identified as **69-year-old Rose Mncibi** and her 21-year-old grandson, **Sbonelo Mncibi**. According to relatives, the pair lived together at the family’s rural home, while other members of the Mncibi family reside in Durban. The gruesome discovery was made when family members arrived at the homestead on Sunday to visit.
A Shocking Discovery
Upon arriving, relatives noticed disturbed soil resembling a fresh grave near the house. Out of concern, they alerted authorities. Police officers were called to the scene, and upon digging, they uncovered the bodies of the grandmother and her grandson, both bound and gagged.
“It is something we will never forget,” a devastated family member said. “To find them in such a manner is too painful for us.”
How the Victims Were Killed
According to preliminary police reports, Sbonelo had sustained severe head injuries and his face had been doused with acid before he was buried. His grandmother, Rose, did not show any visible injuries, leading investigators to suspect that she may have been buried alive on top of her grandson.
Both victims’ hands and feet had been tied, and tape had been placed over their mouths to silence them. The brutal manner of the killings has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving residents fearful and heartbroken.
Police Investigation Underway
KwaZulu-Natal police have confirmed the incident and opened a case of **double murder**. Spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said detectives are following several leads, but no arrests have yet been made.
“We can confirm that the bodies of a woman and her grandson were found buried at a homestead in St Faiths. Both victims had been restrained, and foul play is strongly suspected. We are appealing to anyone with information to come forward,” Netshiunda said.
Community in Mourning
Neighbours and community members have described the pair as humble and peaceful people who kept to themselves. “Gogo Rose was a kind woman who loved her grandson. She did not deserve to die like this,” one resident said.
The shocking discovery has sparked anger and calls for justice, with the family pleading for police to intensify their investigation and ensure that those responsible are swiftly brought to book.
A Family Torn Apart
The Mncibi family is struggling to come to terms with the horrific loss. “What happened is too painful. We cannot understand why someone would do this to them,” a grieving relative said.
As police continue their investigation, the family is preparing for the difficult task of laying their loved ones to rest, while the community of St Faiths remains shaken by the cruelty of the crime.
