A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded when Jacob Sekgotla, a young man, died after being taken to a so-called rehab centre — a place that was supposed to help but instead became the scene of cruelty and neglect.
Jacob and his brother were taken from their home by Makhubele, the operator of the rehab centre. Their mother was convinced they needed help, especially after being told that the boys were causing trouble. Trusting Makhubele, she even paid R2,000 for their rehabilitation. However, what followed was far from the support she hoped for.
Reports reveal that instead of receiving care and guidance, Jacob and his brother suffered abuse. Shockingly, Makhubele allegedly assaulted both boys in front of their mother before taking them to the rehab centre. Once there, the brothers faced terrible conditions — they were reportedly denied food for four consecutive days. This cruel neglect took a tragic toll, and Jacob lost his life due to the mistreatment.
The pain for the family is unimaginable. The very place meant to provide safety and recovery became the source of immense suffering and loss. Now, authorities have stepped in, and police investigations are underway as they seek justice for Jacob and hold those responsible accountable.
This tragedy shines a harsh light on the dangers that can lurk behind unregulated rehab centres and raises urgent questions about the protection and oversight of vulnerable individuals seeking help. For Jacob’s family, the grief and heartbreak will remain forever, but the hope is that their story will prevent such cruelty from happening again.
The police continue their investigation, and the community watches closely, demanding answers and accountability for the devastating loss of a young life that deserved compassion and care.
