Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal elephant attack that occurred at Kruger National Park over the weekend. The deceased, Shaik Adam Shabir Ammed, 59, was a local tourist from Piet Retief, who tragically lost his life while attempting to protect his grandchildren.
The incident took place near the Malalane Gate in the iconic game reserve, which spans Mpumalanga and Limpopo. Ammed’s family had been enjoying a day at the park on Saturday, January 25, 2025, when the tragic event unfolded.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lt-Col Jabu Ndubane explained that the incident began when Ammed’s grandchildren, a 5-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy, were taking pictures of an elephant near Crocodile River. The animal suddenly charged at the children, prompting the boy to grab his younger sibling and run.
As the children fled, the boy tripped and fell. The elephant reportedly turned its attention to him, targeting his legs with its trunk. In a courageous effort to save his grandchildren, Ammed ran to intervene, but the elephant redirected its charge towards him. It trampled him fatally before retreating deeper into the park.
