
A devastating road accident occurred on Friday, 26 September 2025, along the R518 road in Limpopo’s Waterberg district, resulting in the loss of five lives. According to reports, a sedan overtook another vehicle and collided head-on with an oncoming car. The drivers of both vehicles, along with three female passengers, died at the scene. Six other passengers sustained injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has not ruled out reckless driving as a possible cause of the crash, pending formal investigations. Transport and Community Safety MEC, Violet Mathye, expressed deep concern over the incident, stating, “The province is once again grappling with the devastating consequences of reckless driving.” She extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Department spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene noted that the accident occurred during a busy weekend, with many residents attending religious gatherings and family activities. In response, the department has pledged to increase law enforcement visibility on the roads to prevent further tragedies.
