A devastating accident on the notorious Moloto Road (R573) has claimed five lives and left 14 others injured. The tragic collision occurred on the evening of Sunday, 27 April, between Marble Hall in Limpopo and Siyabuswa in Mpumalanga.

According to initial reports from the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, the crash involved a light delivery van and a minibus taxi. The two vehicles collided head-on, resulting in the immediate death of five individuals—two occupants from the van and three from the minibus. The 14 injured passengers were quickly rushed to Philadelphia Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Authorities have indicated that the incident took place on a section of the road currently under construction. The ongoing construction has been a long-standing concern for motorists due to unclear signage and road hazards. Preliminary findings suggest that the van driver may have ignored a temporary road traffic sign, leading to the fatal crash. While the investigation is still underway, reckless driving has not been ruled out as a contributing factor.

Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC, Violet Mathye, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives. “I’m deeply saddened by what has happened,” said Mathye. “We convey our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wish those who are injured a swift recovery. We urge all drivers to exercise maximum caution and patience on the road at all times.”

Residents of the nearby community of Marble Hall are in shock following the horrific event. Local resident Khutso Phala, 26, described the moment the crash happened. “We heard a loud bang in the evening. When we went outside to check, we saw the wreckage. It was horrifying.”

Another community member, Hlompho Mabotja, voiced concern over the deteriorating safety of the region’s roads. “Our roads are no longer safe. To lose five lives in an instant is just heartbreaking. We’re still trying to process what happened.”

Long-time motorist Mantsho Make, 71, recalled Moloto Road’s troubling history. “This road has always had a reputation for serious accidents. We thought things would improve, but today proved otherwise. It’s devastating to see more lives lost.”

The Moloto Road has long been regarded as one of South Africa’s most dangerous routes, with numerous accidents reported over the years. Calls for improved infrastructure, clearer signage, and stricter traffic enforcement have grown louder following this latest tragedy.

As investigations continue, the Department of Transport has pledged to look into further safety measures for the area. Community leaders are also urging motorists to remain vigilant and respect road signs, especially in zones undergoing construction.

The crash has once again brought into sharp focus the dire state of road safety on many of South Africa’s regional routes—highlighting the urgent need for a coordinated response to prevent further loss of life.
