A fatal light aircraft accident occurred on Saturday afternoon in the Boschkop area of Pretoria East, claiming the life of a pilot. Emergency responders rushed to the scene shortly after the incident was reported, but despite their rapid arrival, the pilot was declared dead upon their arrival.

According to a statement issued by the Volunteer Emergency Medical Response Unit (VEMRU), the crash happened just after 16:00. When emergency personnel arrived at the site, they discovered a small, one-seater aircraft that had crashed in an open veld. Tragically, the pilot had sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The aircraft was found in a secluded area, and despite our efforts, the pilot had already succumbed to the injuries,” VEMRU reported. The unit, which is both a registered Non-Profit Organization (NPO) and Public Benefit Organization (PBO), provides emergency medical and trauma response services at no cost to those in need.

Following the tragic accident, the scene was officially handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS). An investigation has been launched in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to determine the cause of the crash. At this stage, no details about the identity of the pilot or the origin of the flight have been released.

This unfortunate incident marks another sobering reminder of the dangers associated with small aircraft flights, even under seemingly normal conditions. Authorities will likely examine weather conditions, mechanical integrity of the aircraft, and the pilot’s background as part of their investigation.

In a separate and equally heartbreaking development earlier that same day, the search for missing Pretoria resident Eric Jones came to a tragic conclusion. Jones had been reported missing, and his locked vehicle was discovered abandoned in the Diepsloot area. Friends and family, determined to locate him, organized a search party. Their efforts led to the discovery of Jones’ body just 300 meters from where his vehicle had been found.

Police confirmed they are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, and they were present at the scene along with distraught family members and friends. The cause of his death remains unconfirmed at this time.

These back-to-back tragedies have left Pretoria East and the surrounding communities in shock. Many residents have taken to social media to express their condolences and to share tributes to the lives lost.

Authorities are appealing to anyone who may have further information regarding the aircraft crash or Eric Jones’ disappearance to come forward. Community members can contact the Rekord news desk at bennittb@rekord.co.za or call 083 625 4114.
