The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is reeling in shock and sorrow following the brutal murder of Elona Sombulula, a dedicated district prosecutor at the Ngcobo Magistrates Court. The 30-year-old was fatally shot near his residence in Mangweni on the evening of Tuesday, 29 April, in what authorities are calling a cold-blooded attack.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gintana, Sombulula was walking when unknown gunmen ambushed him. “Preliminary investigations suggest the victim sustained a single gunshot wound to the head,” she said. Crime scene officers found three spent 9mm cartridges at the location.

The motive behind this tragic killing remains unclear. Authorities are currently investigating all possibilities, including whether the murder is linked to Sombulula’s work as a prosecutor or if it stemmed from personal circumstances. As of now, no arrests have been made.

Police are urging members of the public to come forward with any information that may assist in identifying and apprehending the suspects. Tips can be reported to the Bityi acting detective commander, Warrant Officer Mlilo, at 083 688 6571, or anonymously through Crime Stop at 08600 10111.

NPA regional spokesperson Luxolo Tyali confirmed that Sombulula had joined the authority in 2022 through its aspirant prosecutor programme. At the time of his death, he was serving as an acting regional court prosecutor. “This devastating incident has left a deep wound within the NPA,” Tyali said. “Our thoughts are with Mr. Sombulula’s family, friends, and colleagues during this unimaginably painful time.”

Eastern Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Barry Madolo, expressed profound sadness over the loss, describing Sombulula as one of the NPA’s brightest young stars. “He was a committed public servant who carried out his duties with integrity and courage,” Madolo stated. “The South African Police Service is working around the clock to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice. The NPA will fully support and collaborate with the SAPS in this mission.”

National Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Shamila Batohi, also condemned the killing in the strongest terms. “Any attack on a prosecutor is an attack on the rule of law and the core of our constitutional democracy,” Batohi said. “We offer our deepest condolences to Mr. Sombulula’s loved ones. His legacy will be honoured through the continued pursuit of justice that he so bravely championed.”

As the investigation continues, the tragic loss of Elona Sombulula underscores the growing dangers faced by legal professionals in South Africa. His death has ignited calls for stronger protections for those who dedicate their lives to upholding the law.

The NPA and SAPS are determined to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure that Elona Sombulula’s service and sacrifice are not forgotten.
