A devastating accident occurred on Thursday along the N4 highway near Middelburg Dam, resulting in the tragic loss of two lives and leaving thirteen others with serious injuries. The incident involved a minibus taxi that reportedly lost control before veering off the road and rolling down an embankment.

According to initial reports, the taxi was traveling along the N4 when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle. The cause of the loss of control is still under investigation, but early indications point to possible mechanical failure or driver fatigue. As the vehicle left the roadway, it rolled down a steep embankment, causing severe damage and trapping several passengers inside.

Emergency services were quickly dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, paramedics and rescue teams worked tirelessly to extract those trapped in the wreckage. Unfortunately, two individuals were declared dead at the scene due to the severity of their injuries. Thirteen others were rescued and rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care. Many of the injured sustained serious trauma and are currently under close observation.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic and heartbreaking, with cries for help coming from the overturned vehicle. One bystander noted that the taxi was carrying a number of passengers, likely en route to work or school, given the time of the morning.

Local authorities have since launched a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. The South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Department of Transport are collaborating to piece together what led to the tragedy. Officials are also working to notify the families of the victims and provide them with the necessary support during this difficult time.

The accident has once again raised concerns about road safety, particularly for public transport vehicles. Community members have voiced frustrations about the frequent occurrence of such accidents on the N4 and other major roads. Calls have been made for stricter enforcement of vehicle roadworthiness and regular driver fitness checks, especially for those operating public transport.

Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga expressed her condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a swift recovery. She emphasized the importance of road safety and urged all drivers to exercise extreme caution, especially as the country heads into the busy holiday season.

“This tragic loss of life is a reminder of the importance of road vigilance. We cannot afford to lose more lives due to preventable accidents,” said Chikunga.

As investigations continue, the affected stretch of the N4 has been cleared and reopened to traffic. Authorities are encouraging any witnesses to come forward with information that could assist in the inquiry.

The community around Middelburg remains in mourning as families come to terms with the sudden loss of loved ones. Support services have been made available to help those affected cope with the trauma of the event.
