Mbombela – A devastating head-on collision between two heavy-duty trucks on the N4 Northern Bypass near Mbombela has left both drivers dead, prompting widespread shock in the trucking industry and serious traffic disruptions in the region. The accident occurred on Tuesday evening, September 23, 2025, just before the R37 turn-off.
The Crash and Immediate Response
Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 20:15 after reports of a major accident involving two side tipper trucks, one fully loaded and the other empty. Upon arrival, paramedics and rescue teams from Emer-G-Med found both drivers trapped inside the twisted wreckage.
According to Emer-G-Med spokesperson Martin Jeffrey, the collision scene was described as “absolute chaos.” He confirmed that despite swift response efforts, both truck drivers had already succumbed to their injuries and were declared dead at the scene.
Rescue crews faced immense challenges in recovering the bodies. Heavy-duty equipment, including the jaws of life, had to be used to cut through the mangled metal. Jeffrey said the recovery operation was expected to take several hours, delaying the reopening of the busy route.
Traffic Disruptions and Motorist Warnings
The collision forced authorities to completely shut down the N4 Northern Bypass in both directions. This created significant delays for motorists traveling between Mbombela, Malalane, and Barberton. Authorities urged road users to seek alternative routes to avoid being caught in long queues of traffic stretching for several kilometers.
Truck drivers who were near the crash site when the accident happened initially expressed concern when the drivers could not be located. Sadly, their worst fears were later confirmed when emergency teams recovered the bodies from the wreckage.
Companies and Vehicles Involved
It has since been confirmed that the trucks involved in the fatal crash belonged to 4PL and Freight Logistics, two well-known transport companies. One of the vehicles was carrying a full load, while the other was traveling empty, adding to the devastating impact of the head-on collision.
The incident has raised renewed concerns about safety on the N4, a critical trade and transport route linking South Africa to Mozambique. The stretch of road is heavily used by commercial trucks transporting goods across the border.
Ongoing Investigations
While details surrounding the cause of the crash remain under investigation, authorities have not ruled out possibilities such as driver fatigue, mechanical failure, or human error. The road remained closed late into the night as crash investigators, towing services, and rescue personnel worked tirelessly to clear the scene.
Community Shock and Condolences
The trucking community has expressed sorrow and condolences to the families of the two drivers. Tributes have also poured in from fellow truckers on social media platforms, many of whom emphasized the dangers and pressures faced daily by drivers on long-haul routes.
“Losing two drivers in such a tragic way is heartbreaking. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families,” said one fellow driver at the scene.
The accident serves as yet another grim reminder of the risks faced by truckers who keep the country’s logistics and freight industry moving.
As investigations continue, both companies involved and road safety authorities are expected to release further statements in the coming days.
