A devastating road accident has left the Dullstroom community in shock after six people lost their lives in a horrific collision between a minibus taxi and an SUV along the R540 road in Mpumalanga. The crash occurred on Sunday afternoon, October 26, 2025, leaving behind scenes of destruction and grief.
According to reports from authorities, emergency services were called to the scene shortly after the crash. Upon arrival, paramedics found several passengers trapped inside the wreckage. Despite their efforts, six victims were declared dead at the scene, while eight others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.

The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation. Police have since launched an inquiry to determine what led to the fatal collision. Early reports suggest that weather conditions were clear at the time, but authorities have not ruled out the possibility of speeding, reckless driving, or mechanical failure.
Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison spokesperson Moeti Mmusi confirmed the incident, describing it as “deeply tragic and distressing.” He urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly on high-speed routes such as the R540, which has witnessed several fatal crashes in recent months.
“This heartbreaking incident once again highlights the importance of road safety and responsible driving,” said Mmusi. “We are working closely with police investigators to establish the cause of the accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost their loved ones.”

Eyewitnesses at the scene described the crash as one of the worst they had ever seen. “It was horrifying,” said a motorist who arrived moments after the impact. “The taxi was completely crushed, and debris was scattered all over the road. You could hear people screaming for help. It was chaotic.”
Traffic officials temporarily closed the road to allow rescue teams to clear the wreckage and assist survivors. The road was reopened later in the evening once the vehicles were towed away and all victims accounted for.
Meanwhile, the families of the deceased have been notified, and arrangements are being made for post-mortem examinations. The provincial government has extended its condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
Road safety remains a major concern across South Africa, with hundreds of lives lost annually due to accidents caused by human error, poor road conditions, and vehicle defects. Authorities continue to urge drivers to obey speed limits, avoid distractions, and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy.
As the investigation continues, residents in Dullstroom and surrounding communities are mourning the loss of six lives cut short in yet another tragic reminder of the dangers that persist on the country’s roads.
