A serious motor vehicle accident involving a truck and a car caused chaos along Delmas Road near the Rietvlei Nature Reserve fence on Thursday afternoon, October 2, 2025. The crash occurred just before 13:00 and drew an immediate response from the Volunteer Emergency Medical Response Unit (VEMRU) and other emergency services.
Emergency Response at the Scene
According to VEMRU, first responders arrived to find a severely injured patient trapped inside the wreckage of the car. The individual had sustained critical injuries and required immediate medical attention. Advanced Life Support treatment was initiated on-site to stabilize the patient, while the City of Tshwane Fire and Rescue team used hydraulic rescue equipment, commonly referred to as the “Jaws of Life,” to carefully free the trapped occupant from the mangled vehicle.
Given the extent of the patient’s injuries and the prolonged entrapment, medical teams decided that an airlift to a specialist trauma hospital was the best course of action. A helicopter was summoned, and the patient was transported swiftly to receive further care.
Two additional patients were also assessed at the scene. Fortunately, their injuries were classified as minor, and they did not require advanced intervention.
Traffic and Safety Measures
The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) was present to manage traffic along the busy Delmas Road, ensuring that emergency services had the necessary space to operate. Officers directed vehicles and minimized congestion, allowing rescue and medical teams to carry out their duties effectively.
Authorities have not yet provided further details regarding the exact cause of the collision. However, investigations are expected to follow as accidents along this stretch of road have raised increasing concerns over road safety.
Collaboration Among Emergency Services
The rescue effort highlighted the importance of coordinated emergency responses. Alongside VEMRU, additional medical and rescue support came from Emer-G-Med, Netcare911, ER24, and City of Tshwane Emergency Services. Their combined expertise ensured that victims received urgent care and that the situation was managed efficiently.
The Role of VEMRU in Saving Lives
The incident also sheds light on the critical role played by the Volunteer Emergency Medical Response Unit. VEMRU is a registered non-profit company (NPC) and public benefit organization (PBO) that responds to medical and trauma emergencies free of charge. The organization operates entirely on sponsorships and donations, with no government funding.
Community members and businesses are encouraged to support VEMRU’s life-saving mission. Sponsorship opportunities and Section 18a tax certificates are available for those who contribute, allowing both individuals and organizations to make a meaningful difference in sustaining this essential service.
A Reminder of Road Safety
This accident comes in the wake of several fatal crashes reported across South Africa in recent weeks, including the tragic collision on the R81 near Ga-Sekgopo that claimed 13 lives, and another on the R33 near Pietermaritzburg that left two dead. The Delmas Road incident serves as yet another reminder of the dangers on South African roads and the importance of vigilance, caution, and proper vehicle maintenance.
As investigations continue, authorities are urging motorists to exercise patience and remain alert to reduce the risks of such devastating accidents.
