An emotional farewell was held on Saturday, 11 October 2025, for Thembi Mtshweni (26), who was laid to rest at Zithobeni Cemetery in Bronkhorstspruit, Tshwane.
Thembi was among five people who were brutally shot and killed at the Qedukoma Tavern in Zithobeni. Her untimely death has left the community reeling from shock and sorrow.
Her sister, Betty Mahlangu (41), said the family was heartbroken but hoped that the funeral would bring them a sense of closure. “As we bury her in her final resting place, maybe our hearts will heal a little bit,” she said, holding back tears.
Betty described Thembi as a cheerful and loving person who always brightened the room. Family members and friends wore white T-shirts printed with her face as a tribute to her memory.
Thembi’s niece, Nomfundo Mahlangu (23), shared emotional words about her late aunt. “She always looked after me. She was caring and full of laughter. She loved everyone and was always smiling,” she said.
Friends and neighbours who attended the funeral expressed their grief and disbelief. Phindile Nkuna, a neighbour, said Thembi was like a sister to her. “I can’t believe she’s gone. She didn’t deserve to die this way,” she said sadly.
Another neighbour, Zodwa Tshione, recalled raising Thembi when she was young and said her sudden death had left a deep void in their community. “I watched her grow up into a beautiful young woman. Her life was taken too soon,” she said.
Law enforcement officials have confirmed that the investigation into the tavern shooting is ongoing. Brigadier Brenda Muridili, spokesperson for the Gauteng Police, said the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit has taken over the case. “The Serious and Violent Crimes Tracking Team is pursuing the suspects,” she confirmed.
The Qedukoma Tavern shooting has sparked outrage in the community, with residents calling for stronger safety measures and justice for the victims. Many are demanding that the tavern be closed or monitored to prevent further violence.
Thembi’s funeral became not only a farewell but also a moment of reflection for the community of Zithobeni — a call for peace, justice, and the protection of innocent lives.
As her coffin was lowered into the ground, family members wept uncontrollably, remembering a young woman who was full of life and dreams. Thembi’s death has left an unfillable void, but her memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.
Her family has pleaded with authorities to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice, saying that only then will they truly find peace.
“All we want now is justice for Thembi,” said Betty. “She did not deserve to die like this.”
