A routine act of kindness turned into a devastating tragedy when two friends were gunned down in Thokoza, Ekurhuleni, leaving families shattered and young children without a father.
The incident happened on Monday, 16 March, when 32-year-old Tsepo Mokoena and his close friend, 27-year-old Bongani Msibi, were ambushed by unknown gunmen. What was meant to be a simple trip to deliver a tablet to Tsepo’s daughter ended in bloodshed.

According to reports, the two men had parked their red VW Polo outside a house on Sekese Street. While one of them had gone to visit his girlfriend, a white Nissan Almera pulled up next to their vehicle. Two suspects allegedly got out of the car and opened fire, unleashing multiple gunshots at close range.
Both Tsepo and Bongani were shot during the attack. One died inside the vehicle while the other collapsed outside. They were declared dead at the scene.
A woman who was at the location to collect the tablet was also caught in the crossfire. She sustained gunshot wounds but managed to escape and was rushed to hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment.
The tragedy has left families in deep mourning. Tsepo’s father, Thulani Mokoena, described the moment he received the news as one that will haunt him forever. Rushing to the scene, he was confronted with the lifeless bodies of his son and his friend.

The pain is even more profound as Tsepo leaves behind four young children, aged between just five months and five years. His father expressed heartbreak that the children will now grow up without their father’s love, guidance, and support.
Bongani’s family is also struggling to cope with the loss. Described as a hardworking and ambitious young man, he ran a cellphone repair and accessories business and was determined to build a better future for himself. His loved ones say his death has left a huge void in their lives.
Relatives who arrived at the scene were met with a horrific sight. One family member recounted finding Bongani’s body in the passenger seat while Tsepo’s body was hanging by the driver’s door, highlighting the brutality of the attack.
Police have since opened cases of murder and attempted murder. Authorities confirmed that no arrests have been made so far, and investigations are ongoing.
Law enforcement officials are appealing to anyone with information that could assist in identifying the suspects to come forward. The motive behind the killing remains unclear.
The shocking incident has once again raised concerns about violent crime in communities across Ekurhuleni, with residents calling for justice and improved safety measures.
As the families prepare to lay their loved ones to rest, they are left with unanswered questions and the hope that those responsible will soon be brought to justice.
