Two suspects involved in the shocking murder case of Morudi Frank Phetla, a 64-year-old nurse from Jane Furse, were granted bail by the Nebo Magistrates Court in Limpopo on Friday, 16 May 2025. The suspects, Juliet Mahube (42) and Tebogo Regina Mojela (40), appeared before the court facing serious charges relating to the kidnapping and brutal killing of Phetla.
The two women are accused of conspiring in the murder along with Phetla’s wife, Rosina Phetla (60), who has been identified as the second accused. Rosina is believed to have played a central role in orchestrating the killing of her husband, but she previously chose to abandon her bail application.
According to the police, the murder occurred on 16 March 2025, when Phetla was allegedly abducted just outside his home in the Zamane Section of Jane Furse. His vehicle was later discovered still running with the headlights on, raising immediate concerns. A day later, on 17 March, his lifeless and naked body was found by a shepherd floating in the Motsipiri River, bearing signs of severe head injuries.
Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the spokesperson for the Limpopo police, confirmed that the arrests of the suspects were made on 6 April at different locations in Gauteng and Limpopo provinces. He described the killing as a brutal and deeply disturbing act that shocked the local community.
Phetla was a well-respected nurse employed at the Jane Furse Hospital and was nearing his retirement, which was planned for December 2025. His untimely and violent death has left a deep void among colleagues, friends, and residents in the area.
Mashudu Malabi-Dzangi, spokesperson for the Limpopo National Prosecuting Authority, stated that both Mahube and Mojela were granted bail of R1,500 each following the judgment in their bail application. The court decided to release them while investigations continue.
“The matter has been postponed to 18 July 2025 for further investigation,” said Malabi-Dzangi. “Accused number two, who is the deceased’s wife, remains in custody after abandoning her bid for bail.”
Phetla’s family was reportedly not available for comment, and the motive behind the murder is still being investigated. However, the involvement of his spouse in the crime has raised many questions and drawn widespread attention to the case.
The community continues to express outrage and grief over the loss of Phetla, who was known for his service and dedication in the healthcare sector. Many are now watching closely as the case unfolds in hopes of justice for a man who served his community with commitment and compassion.
The court proceedings are expected to resume on 18 July, where further developments and potentially more evidence will be presented.
