South Africa was plunged into shock and confusion after widespread reports claimed that *Umndeni* reality television star Flora Makena, popularly known as Mahlalentabeni, had died. The news spread rapidly across social media and was echoed by several platforms and public commentators, leaving fans, fellow entertainers, and the broader public mourning what they believed was a tragic loss.
In a dramatic turn of events, Mahlalentabeni’s family has since confirmed that she is alive. According to relatives, the reality TV personality survived a severe medical emergency that was initially mistaken for death, leading to the premature reports that caused national alarm.

Family spokesperson Nomvula described the traumatic moment when Mahlalentabeni was found unresponsive. She said the family believed the worst after noticing alarming physical signs that suggested she had passed away. “Her body was cold, and foam was coming out of her mouth. That moment traumatised us. We truly thought she was gone,” Nomvula explained.
Mahlalentabeni was rushed to hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit, where she remained unconscious for several days. She later regained consciousness and was eventually discharged, much to the relief of her loved ones and supporters.
The family has since revealed that the incident was linked to an apparent suicide attempt. According to their account, Mahlalentabeni allegedly overdosed on medication on Christmas Eve after experiencing intense emotional distress. They claim that this was not her first attempt and say her mental health struggles have been ongoing.

Nomvula stated that the family now lives in constant fear for Mahlalentabeni’s safety. “My mother found her trying to take her own life. We are now living in fear that this could happen again,” she said, highlighting the seriousness of the situation and the emotional toll it has taken on the family.
In addition to sharing details of the incident, the family has made serious allegations against Moja Love, the channel that airs *Umndeni*. They claim Mahlalentabeni’s mental health deteriorated after she allegedly was not paid for her work, while other cast members received their salaries. The family also alleges that she experienced bullying, emotional abuse, and public humiliation, both during filming and on social media.
They further claim that despite her struggles, Mahlalentabeni continued filming under pressure because she is the main breadwinner in her household and felt she had no choice but to keep working.
Moja Love has strongly denied all allegations. Channel spokesperson Nonzwakazi Cekete stated that the broadcaster did not mistreat Mahlalentabeni or subject her to unfair labour practices. According to the channel, all contractual obligations were honoured, payments were made for work completed, and an advance was provided at the star’s request. The channel also suggested that Mahlalentabeni’s difficulties were personal and unrelated to her work on *Umndeni*.
The conflicting accounts have left the public confused but deeply concerned. At the same time, Mahlalentabeni’s survival has sparked an outpouring of support and renewed conversations about mental health, financial stress, and the hidden pressures faced by reality TV stars.
As Mahlalentabeni continues her recovery, many questions remain unanswered. This remains a developing story, and further updates are expected as more verified information comes to light.
