Winnie Khumalo, the beloved Afropop singer, has passed away after a short illness, leaving her friends, family, and fans in disbelief. The singer, who attended the Basadi in Music Awards nominees announcement at Joburg Theatre in June 2023, showed no signs of illness in recent months.

Her sudden death was confirmed on Tuesday, with many expressing their devastation over the unexpected news.

### Chicco Twala: “It Took Me by Surprise”

Sello Chicco Twala, a renowned music producer and close friend of Winnie Khumalo, shared his heartbreak upon learning of her death. Twala, who worked with Khumalo on many successful projects, revealed he received the news from Winnie’s son.

“Winnie wasn’t sick. There was no sign at all,” Twala said. “I found out just three hours ago when her son called to confirm. He was driving back home when I called him to verify. It’s true—she’s gone.”

Twala said the news was even more shocking because he had seen Winnie just days before. “I saw her on Sunday. She was her usual self—full of energy and life. If she had been ill, it would have been easier to understand, but there was nothing unusual. Death doesn’t care whether you’re healthy or sick—it just happens,” he added.

### A Devastating Loss

Another close family friend recalled how they received the heartbreaking news from Winnie’s daughter, Rethabile. The friend, who preferred not to be named, said Rethabile was crying when she called to share the news.

“At first, I thought the call was about her brother, who had been unwell. I didn’t expect it to be about Winnie,” the friend said. “Last week, I spoke to Winnie about her son. She seemed busy but sounded fine. There was no indication that anything was wrong with her health.”

The friend described the phone call with Rethabile as deeply emotional. “Her cries were heartbreaking. It was hard to process what she was saying, but the pain in her voice was unmistakable.”
